Yuko Kawashima — Kutani ware where retro and modern meet
share
Unique Expression
Yuko Kawashima's works have bold and unique compositions and colors that are reminiscent of modern art, yet her motifs have a nostalgic, retro feel to them. Her eye for capturing familiar scenes such as Showa-era buildings, street corners, signs, and flowers seems to evoke a "scene from memory" that we all have.
Encounters and collaborations
When I came across Kawashima's work at a gallery, I fell in love at first sight with its unique expression. From the choice of motif to the composition and use of color, his work stands out as unique and I had a hunch that it would be particularly popular with young women. Through an introduction from the gallery, a collaboration with KASHIKO was realized, and since then, numerous collaborations have been born.
Masking tape is popular overseas too
The masking tape that we produced together with Kawashima has been particularly well-received overseas, even among the KASHIKO lineup. The retro and nostalgic theme is layered with pop and modern colors, and it has been accepted as a new, warm expression of Kutani.
Resonating with KASHIKO
Kawashima's art resonates with KASHIKO 's philosophy of "bringing serenity and beauty into everyday life." Her works, which combine nostalgia and modernity, add small stories and color to everyday life, leaving a gentle impression in the hearts of those who see them.
